Big Steve, in the words of a terrific coach we all know and love [ahem] "That looked WAY too easy!"

I spent the day today at the Horse Park watching my youngest daughter ride in her first A Circuit Hunter/Jumper show with her pony. I think we're the only people there who do everything ourselves - no fleet of stable-workers to feed & groom & tack and braid and exercise and train the pony, just me and Catie and her teacher. The other competitors are clients of big, expensive training stables with $50,000+ horses, color-coordinated stable awnings and real grass they lay out to put little tables and chairs upon. Quite an eye-opener. Two of Catie's friends, whose family is quite wealthy and who own two very highly-trained and expensive ponies, came over from their barn so they could help groom our pony, since they aren't supposed to groom their own. How sad is that?

Watching the whole process made me see the parallels between the equestrian world and the globo-gym/machines-for-fitness world. You can choose to have someone or something else do the bulk of the work for you, and you can look good, but you don't get anything like the benefits to your whole being, body and soul, that you do when you do the work yourself.

That said, I am REALLY glad I didn't get to come do the Bear Complex today. If I had, I'd be crying tomorrow when faced with thrusters, cleans and SDHPs!
